Up until late 2003, NHS Board-level counts of the numbers of practice staff (including practice nurses) employed by general practices were supplied to ISD by NHS Boards, as part of the data forms ISD(M)8GMS and ISD(M)8PMS. With the introduction of the new GMS contract on 1st April 2004, there were changes to information that practices were required to provide as part of their contracts, with supply of information on practice nurses and other staff no longer mandatory. However, information on practice nurses and healthcare assistants was gathered as part of the National Primary Care Workforce Surveys referred to above.
